AI – Opportunities and Risks: November 27th (3:45pm – 5pm)

Whether we like it or not AI has slowly creeped into our daily lives in recent years and will undoubtedly have a huge impact on our learners moving forward. Beyond the more common use of bots and search engines like ChatGPT there are significant opportunities and risks for leaders to consider. The potential to reduce workload and train our workforce could be transformational for the profession whilst accessibility features for the most vulnerable of learners is unquestionably exciting. On the flip side do we risk deskilling practitioners and losing the craft of teaching and having young people retreat even further into a digital online world? In this session through panel discussions, lightning talk input and open debate we explore innovative and successful approaches to AI and what future government policy might mean for us.

Preparing for life: December 4th (3:45pm – 5pm)

With a recent (very welcome) shift in policy, Preparing for Life (preparing for adulthood) has become more widely recognised and valued across the system. The DfE’s curriculum and assessment review and forthcoming enrichment framework give more than a nod to longer term outcomes that sit outside of the traditional curriculum whilst the language of the new Ofsted framework and score cards are a big step forward in this space. Through a range of lightning talks, panel discussions and breakout conversations this session explores innovative approaches from both mainstream and specialist leaders in how they support learners to flourish beyond the school gates. We are also delighted to welcome young adults with real lived experience to share the good and bad bits from their journey.

This session explores ambitious and innovative approaches to curriculum that are agile and responsive to the needs of learners presenting with increasingly complex needs. We will also hear from colleagues engaged in the DfE’s curriculum and assessment review and upcoming enrichment framework to unpick the opportunities and potential challenges for our sector. Early reading and communication: January 22nd (3:45pm – 5pm)

Reading has long been a key metric for measuring success in the school system and rightly regarded as a key pillar for learning and development. For a significant majority of learners traditional phonics programmes and reading schemes will see them quickly progress and become fluent, competent readers. Increasing numbers of young people with more complex learning needs often require a different approach that supports communication and a more functional approach to reading. This session explores theory and the evidence base alongside contributions from practitioners and school leaders taking innovative approaches to the explicit teaching of reading and communication for learners with the most complex of needs.
