Leading together: Ambition and aspiration in SEND

The Leaders in SEND Regional Conference, hosted by Evidence for Learning, brought together school and college leaders from across the country for a day of collaboration, reflection, and shared purpose. In a time when SEND provision faces significant challenges, including funding constraints, recruitment difficulties, and increasing complexity of needs, this event provided a much-needed opportunity for connection and collective problem-solving.

Why this conference matters

Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions on interpretations and approaches to SEND and inclusion. The emphasis was on ambition, aspiration, and community as essential elements in improving learning and life outcomes for learners. The event addressed current pressures in the sector, providing a supportive space for leaders to reflect on their own settings while learning from others. It was an opportunity to step back, connect, and refocus on what truly matters.

Inspiration and shared learning

The day featured keynote sessions and workshops led by esteemed speakers including Diane Rochford OBE, Vijita Patel, James Waller, and Claire Bones. These sessions invited participants to explore new perspectives and strategies to support learners with SEND. Participants highlighted the value of the conference in fostering inspiration and cooperation. One attendee noted:

“These events are invaluable for sharing best practice, learning, and understanding what is going to make a difference.”

Another shared:

“I made a connection with another school at the event, and we’ve shared learning and insights since.”

Building a professional community

The conference underscored the importance of community and the shared values of collaboration and professional development. Beyond the workshops and keynotes, the event created space for leaders to connect with others facing similar challenges. Meaningful peer-to-peer exchange and a sense of mutual support were woven through the day. The stories and connections shared point to the powerful role these gatherings play in strengthening our network of SEND leaders.

The power of collective ambition

By working together, SEND leaders can better innovate and find collective solutions to common challenges, ultimately improving support for the most vulnerable learners. The event reaffirmed the importance of staying grounded in shared values, supporting each other, and championing aspiration for every child and young person.
